Shitfing Taxes In Texas -Starring Dwayne Bohac and Governor Goodhair
Submitted by lightseeker on Thu, 04/17/2008 - 05:32.In my last posting I put the lie to the claim that the rich pay more than their share of taxes. Let me now put the lie to the claim that Republicans are tax cutters. They are tax shifters.
If you were to name the least favorite tax to Republicans like it would be hands down, the progressive income tax. Recall what it was called in the last posting - "legal plunder." So, how do they want to pay for the public goods and services we all need? Well, they want to shift the system from the more progressive taxes , which emphasize ability to pay as a factor in setting rates, to ones which ignore ability to pay and emphasize "flat , one size fits all equality". Consumption/sales taxes are one example. Such taxes have the impact of shifting tax burdens from those who are benefitting to most AND can afford to pay their share to those who are less able to do so. In other words, the game is shift the tax burden

Some choice bits.
Giuliani has also developed a bond with Texas Gov. Rick Perry, whom he helped win re-election last year. That groundwork could make Perry a high-profile ally in Texas, although the governor hasn't yet endorsed a presidential candidate.

Tide is turning for Port of Galveston
Submitted by Marcelene Casey on Fri, 03/09/2007 - 21:56.This was in yesterday’s Galveston Daily News.
Five years ago, not a lot of island residents were praising the Port of Galveston.
Voters in 2001 had rejected a measure that would have deeded most of its publicly owned docks to the Port of Houston, and resentments lingered.
But on Wednesday, the tide had turned for the prospering deep-water port.

Over the last 2 days a story has broken out of the hearings before Senator John Whitmire's Criminal Justice Committee that rocks me to the core. Texas prisions and jails are a disgrace as I try to document here. Turns out the Juvenile Correction System is even worse.
Picking on Women and Children: A Repug Tradition Revisited
Submitted by lightseeker on Wed, 02/28/2007 - 06:32.If the Great Society taught GOP ideologues anything, it was that directly attacking the poor was bad politics.
Enter "compassionate conservativism" and a Democratic President who found himself facing a Congress lead by the likes of Newt Gingrich and Tom Delay. [ Remember triangulation? If you do, you know what Hillary is trying to do in her "stance" on the Iraq War ]
Merck Buys Goodhair - Girls Have Cancer-Free Sex
Submitted by Lyn Wall on Fri, 02/02/2007 - 16:31.The Austin American Statesman is reporting that Goodhair has ordered that all schoolgirls, beginning with age 11 receive the anti-cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil.
So why would an anti-choice, ant-women's rights wingnut take such a bold step? Was it for the good of the children? Not exactly:
